Usages of Bentonite

  • High quality sodium activated bentonite designed to meet the requirements of API / OCMA specifications.
  • In the preparation of drilling mud fluid for oil well drilling
  • Important Characteristics –
  • High Surface area
  • High swelling and thixotropic properties
  • Good plasticity and lubricity
  • Low filter loss & High viscosity
  • High shear and compressive strength
  • Low compressibility
  • High Water Absorption & Minimum Fluid Loss
  • Some iron ore concentrates consist of finely divided particles and must be pelletized with a binder before they can be used as a blast furnace feed. The conventional binder is high swelling Bentonite.
  • Sodium based bentonite serves as one of the most important bonding material in IOP applications
  • Bentonite is having high bonding nature which collects all iron ore fines together as balls easy for transportation
  • Bentonite in pellets:
    • High Bonding strength-less consumption
    • Good thermal Stability – less dead clay
    • Improves the mechanical properties of the fired pellets, reducing the quantity of fine particles produced
    • It prevents air blows, pin holes and other casting defects
  • Sodium Bentonite with high swelling is used as foundry green sand binder for all kind of compaction (pressing, blowing, vibration etc.) and for all foundry metals and methods of casting
  • High bonding strength
  • It gives excellent ram ability with good permeability prevents air blows, pin holes and other casting defects
  • Bentonite has got an excellent THERMAL properties due to its high resistance to heat. Gives good green compressive strength
  • When hot iron slurry is poured in to the mold the Bentonite slurry will act as media & not to stick hot iron.
  • Bentonite designed  to  meet  the requirements of civil engineering applications, especially for Construction of large diameter bored
  • Bentonite in civil engineering applications is used traditionally as it decreases viscosity over a time, support and lubricant agent in diaphragm walls and for permanent foundations.
  • High Water Absorption & Minimum Fluid Loss
  • High swelling and thixotropic properties
  • Good plasticity , lubricity & High viscosity
  • Bentonite is used due to its viscosity and plasticity character.
  • Natural high swelling Bentonite is used to improve Pellet quality and durability, to reduce caking or crumbling of the feed. It improves the flow ability
  • In cattle feed cake used as cake binder and ultimately will be a part of cattle feed
  • It also is used as an ion exchanger for improvement and conditioning of the soil
  • When thermally treated, it can be used as herbicides and pesticides
  • Bentonite is used for cat litter, due to its advantage of absorbing refuse by forming clumps (which can be easily removed) leaving the remaining product intact for further use
  • It also reduces the odor
  • Bentonite is crucial to paper making, where it is used in pitch control.
  • To improve the efficiency of conversion of pulp into paper as well as to improve the quality of the paper.
  • Bentonite also offers useful de-inking properties for paper recycling. In addition, acid-activated bentonite is used as the active component in the manufacture of carbonless copy paper.
